The High on Fun Blacklist

What We Never Use — and Why

We believe your skin (and the planet) deserve better. That’s why we refuse to use the following controversial ingredients — even if they’re still legal or common in cosmetics. Here's exactly what we’ve banned — and why

Synthetic Preservatives & Irritants
Parabens

Used to extend shelf life, but linked to potential hormone disruption and banned in many clean formulations.

Phenoxyethanol

A synthetic preservative and potential endocrine disruptor. It’s associated with skin irritation and potential toxicity at higher doses.

BHA & BHT

Synthetic antioxidants used in oily formulas. They’re suspected endocrine disruptors and considered harmful to marine life.

MIT / MCIT (Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone)

Powerful preservatives with a high risk of triggering skin allergies — banned in many regions for leave-on products.

Triclosan / Triclocarban

Used as antimicrobial agents but now banned in several countries due to hormonal and environmental concerns.

Silicones, PEGs & Polymers
Dimethicone

A silicone that forms a barrier over skin. It can clog pores, isn't biodegradable, and doesn’t support long-term skin health.

Cyclopentasiloxane / Cyclotetrasiloxane

Volatile silicones that give products a silky feel but are linked to hormone disruption and environmental persistence.

PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols)

Used to improve texture and absorption, but often contaminated with carcinogens (like 1,4-dioxane) during processing.

Carbomer

A synthetic thickener that’s not dangerous, but non-biodegradable. We prefer greener alternatives.

Polysorbates

Emulsifiers made from PEGs, which may contain contamination risks and aren’t always sustainably sourced.

Sodium Acrylates Copolymer

Used for thickening and film-forming. Not biodegradable and derived from petrochemicals.

Mineral Oils & Petrochemicals
Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil)

A cheap filler from petroleum that sits on top of the skin, disrupting its natural balance.

Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly)

Highly refined petroleum by-product. While occlusive, it has no nutritional benefit to skin and is unsustainable.

Microcrystalline Wax / Cera Microcristallina / Ozokerite

Waxes derived from fossil fuels. We opt for plant-based waxes that are cleaner and renewable.

Polyisobutene / Polybutene / Polyethylene

Used in glosses and balms. They’re plastic-based, non-biodegradable, and environmentally damaging.

Chemical UV Filters
Octocrylene

Linked to skin irritation and coral reef damage.

Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)

A known endocrine disruptor and one of the most controversial sunscreen ingredients globally.

Homosalate

Potentially hormone-disrupting and bioaccumulative.

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate

Can generate free radicals when exposed to UV light and damage sensitive skin.

4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor

Banned in many countries for hormonal activity. Not aligned with our safety standards

Sulfates & Harsh Surfactants
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)

Harsh detergents that strip skin and damage the moisture barrier — especially problematic for sensitive skin.

Synthetic Dyes & Colorants
HC Blue 2, Basic Orange 31, p-Phenylenediamine

Used in hair and brow dyes. These coal-tar-derived colorants are linked to allergy, irritation, and possible toxicity.

Nanoparticles (e.g., Nano Titanium Dioxide)

We only use Non-Nano-Particles. Nano-particles may penetrate the skin and pose unknown long-term risks.
